Studio 54 bagel by Bageletto in San Francisco
Take My Money: Studio 54 at Bageletto
Naming any food item after something musical is a surefire way to get my attention. Case in point: today, I tried a bagel sandwich called Studio 54 at the new Bageletto cafe in San Francisco. It’s a BLT with house roasted beef and aioli on a bagel of your choice; I got it on a Calabrian chile and cheese bagel, which is automatically a new favorite in town. The roast beef is tender and medium rare and really stands out from regular deli meat, so I do think it’s worth the price jump from the $11 BLT to the $18 Studio 54, which is providing lunch and dinner for me today. I also got to try a pizza bagel on a garlic bagel as well as samples of the fig and bacon cream cheese, which I am going to kick myself for not buying.
SoCal: Get a Magical Deal on Avocados from The Avocado Fairy
I just found out that my longtime DJ/producer friend Vivian Host’s sister is The Avocado Fairy! If you are a chef, restaurant or avocado enthusiast in Los Angeles, Ventura or Orange County, she is looking for new accounts and has an incredible deal for you:
“Locally independently grown Hass avocados — she is selling for $4/lb if they pick up from distribution points in LA, Camarillo and Irvine. Or delivery available for a fee. She is also selling avocado honey (created by the bees of the avocado trees) - 16 oz for $20. Contact Malorie Lanthier at avocadofairy805@gmail.com (preferred) or DM @the.avocadofairy on Instagram.”
Map: Clement Street Favorites
Breadbelly in San Francisco
Last week, I asked you to let me know what your favorite food street in California is; I’d still love to know your choice, if you didn’t answer, and you can reply to this message. Since a few readers said Clement Street in San Francisco, this week’s map is of my Favorite Places to Eat on Clement. I know I have many more spots to try, but these are all wonderful!
Good Taste: The Legacy Challenge
Chef Ranjan Dey at New Delhi Restaurant in San Francisco
This week’s GOOD TASTE column at 48 Hills is about supporting San Francisco Legacy Businesses. There are a number of categories in the Legacy registry that have to do with food, including ice cream parlors, food wholesalers, cafés and family-owned restaurants such as New Delhi and Da Flora. The column challenges you to browse the registry and find some places to support. I’m always running around to new openings, but want to spend more time honoring the classics so that they stick around!
Watch: State Bird Provisions Flies to Okinawa
Last night, thanks to my friend Marcia the Tablehopper, I attended a special event with Japan Airlines at one of my favorite San Francisco restaurants, State Bird Provisions. We were graced with a special visit from Emiko-san of Emi No Mise, a farm restaurant in Okinawa where State Bird’s Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski visited to learn the secrets of Okinawan longevity. State Bird presented small plates inspired by the trip.
Stuart and Emiko-san in the State Bird kitchen
Egg tofu with bitter melon
Shikuwasa noodles, local seaweeds and urchin
Mandarin with guava-lime and togarashi
Okinawan-style mixed rice
Scallop with avocado and passion fruit
I thought you’d enjoy watching the short documentary they made in Japan.
